Dr Andrew Wragg, Cardiologist

Dr. Andrew Wragg

I am a consultant cardiologist at the Barts Heart Centre, one of the largest cardiac centres in Europe, where I am the Director of Governance and Audit. I am an interventional cardiologist and also specialise in diagnosing and caring for patients with suspected or confirmed heart disease. This includes patients with chest pain, breathlessness and palpitations as well as assessing and managing cardiovascular risk. I am experienced in caring for patients with complex medical problems, particularly related to renal disease.

I am the Vice President elect (from May 2016) for Clinical Standards at the British Cardiovascular Society and at Barts I run the Rapid Access Chest Pain Service.

Clinical Practice

I manage patients with all types of cardiovascular problem but have specific expertise in managing patients with chest pain and related syndromes and also assessing and managing cardiovascular risk. I also specialise in the assessment and management of patients with renal disease who also have cardiac concerns and problems.

I am interested in patients with breathing problems, palpitations (an abnormal awareness of the heart beating) and high blood pressure. I perform coronary angiography and coronary stent procedures at the Heart Attack Centre at The Barts Heart Centre, one of the largest heart attack centres in the UK.

I am also interested in the diagnosis and management of patients with valvular heart disease. I am experienced at Trans Oesophageal Echocardiography.

Research background and interests

I was awarded a PhD by the University of London for research into stem cells undertaken at the National Institute of Health in the USA. I presently undertake research into understanding the outcome of patients after they have had angioplasty procedures. I am also interested in better understanding the cardiac risks of non-cardiac surgery.

I am currently undertaking research into the response to cardiac treatments from a patient's perspective. I am leading a research project at Barts on Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMS) and I also chair a working group at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR). I am particularly interested in PROMs after angioplasty and cardiac surgery.

My research publications can be found here.

Training

I qualified from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College in 1994 where I was awarded London University Honours Distinctions in all subjects.

My postgraduate training in cardiology was based at Barts Health NHS Trust and the National Institute of Health in America. I was appointed as a consultant in 2007.

Current NHS Position

I work at the Barts Heart Centre (Barts Health NHS Trust) as an interventional Cardiologist and at The Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) as a general Cardiologist. I also work within the Heart Attack Service at Barts.

I am an Honorary Senior Lecturer at Queen Mary and Westfield College, London University.

I run the rapid access chest pain service at Barts and I am clinical lead for the Cardiac Rehabilitation service.

Since 2015 I have been the Clinical Director for Governance and Audit at the Barts Heart Centre.
